About Windows of Mississippi

Our Mission

When you step into a Mississippi church, the light that filters through its stained glass is more than beauty - it is survival, memory, and the story of a community. Windows of Mississippi: A Legacy of Place and People creates the first publicly accessible digital archive of Mississippi's stained-glass heritage as a participatory community history project.

The Power of Place

Mississippi's stained glass - found in rural chapels, urban sanctuaries, civic institutions, and historic homes across all 82 counties - forms one of the most significant and least documented collections of community memory in the state. These windows tell stories of tornado recovery, civil rights struggle, immigration, interfaith cooperation, and the everyday acts of faith and citizenship that define Mississippi communities.

We the People

This archive is designed for growth through the contributions of Mississippi communities telling their own stories. Churches, synagogues, historical societies, families, and civic institutions across Mississippi are invited to contribute their own stained-glass stories, creating a living record of Mississippi heritage told by Mississippians themselves.

Pearl River Glass Conservatory

This project is led by Pearl River Glass Conservatory in Jackson, Mississippi. For over fifty years, Pearl River Glass Studio has designed, fabricated, and restored stained glass windows across the state, preserving this vital part of Mississippi's cultural heritage.
